I used to buy toy cars with my Christmas money ….. Molly gets her i-pod touch

January 11, 2009

Okay, not quite true. It was Christmas and Holy Communion money that paid for it. She’s been after a new Ipod for a long time, having used an old ipod mini for a little while.

The orriginal plan was to get a Nano. But then cousin Helen came down just before christmas and showed Molly all the lovely things she could do with the Ipod Touch. A couple of application store games later and Molly is sold on the idea.

By the end of Christmas she’d saved enough in extra Christmas money and Grandma & Grandpa pocketmoney to pay for it. Then the pestering started. We gave in today and went and got it. It’s shiny and lovely and I really want one, because Molly’s only letting me use it to sync her music and apps and put the passwords in for the apps store.

Back to the Ipod A-Z thing……

September 5, 2008

Okay, so before we headed to London I’d gotten to the end of the Bs in my Stupid I-pod A-Z thing. But a couple of days before London I broke my rules and went straight to That Petrol Emotion. Once back from London, still fresh from the wonder of seeing the band live once more, it was back on with TPE. (The rules are mine, therefore any and all excuses I make about the rules are allowed. So there.)

But we’re back on now. Onwards to C. Which was always going to take an awful long time. The entire works of Cabaret Voltaire, Carter USM and The Cure is going to take me at least all of September I reckon. 619 songs for the three bands. Roughly 10% of my music there in three bands. Wow.

Currently on the really dancy Cabaret Voltaire phase. Friday night party whilst reading up on the LHC and data centres. Oh, I know how to have fun.

Richard’s Stupid i-pod A-Z thing update

August 21, 2008

The stupid I-pod thing continues. After a week we’re now halfway through B. Bloody hell, this could take a while. But it’s certainly reminding me of some of the music that I never listen to for one reason or another. I’ve tried doing something like this before but using shuffle it doesn’t really work, as shuffle tends to get restarted after a little while and music gets missed.

For example, tonight it’s Black Box Recorder, Blake Babies and Blondie. I rarely listen to the Blondie but tonight it’s just been marvellous. Little things that amaze me; Rapture and that beautiful two minute lead out at the end with the last 50 seconds an amazing meld of what sounds like a completely new song with Debbie Harry’s voice slowly fading away and a guitar solo coming out of nowhere. And after all these years I’ve finally realised what she’s singing at one point: Back to Back, sacroiliac – as in the sacroiliac joint in your spine. Fantastic.

So I think the Stupid Ipod A-Z thing is proving to be a complete success.

Is an I-pod part of your mind?

August 3, 2008

hmmm…… an interesting Guardian piece. Although if, as they make out the i-pod can be classed as part of the brain then my pda and even the remember the milk website I use can be considered part of mine as well.

Downloading madness……

July 20, 2008

In many ways this downloading lark is really bad news for my Ipod.
I’m finding I suddenly remember something I used to have or liked one track from and going online to download a load of stuff by that particular artiste.

For example, tonight my listening has consisted of the works of Big Audio Dynamite, Missy Elliot and Lloyd Cole. None of which I’d ever have considered getting from the shops before I discovered this downloading lark. I-pod now has 3GB empty. It’s going to start groaning soon.

Want, Want, Want again…..

April 29, 2008

Okay, in addition to this lot, I’ve got a new want to add onto the techie list.
We’ve had some new monitors at school to replace clunky old CRT monitors. The best value we could get were 17 inch ones.
Just for fun I brought one home last night to compare to my meager 15 inch monitor.
Now I want one. Or a 19 inch one maybe.

But I have decided that I’m not going to get a new I-Pod after all.
30Gb is a fine number for music. I’ve started going through the music on there with a critical ear and deleting some of it now. (It seems that this is normal after having a bit of a binge on bit-torrent).

And I’m waiting until they release the new 9 inch scren version of the eeepc to see what impact that has on prices. We’ve already had one educational supplier emailing today with a 7 inch 4Gb for £189 (excl VAT) so maybe prices will come down even more.

CD Culling time …. and downloading

April 7, 2008

Currently having another cull of cds. This happens every so often. In the last few years my cd racks have been getting lighter and lighter as more and more I find myself not really caring whether I have the actual cd to hand.

It’s obviously an I-pod thing. After all, if I can have every bit of music I own at my fingertips why on earth do I need all of this packaging lying around.
A few years ago I’d never have dreamt that my mind would be working this way but I love the fact that it’s all so beautifully self contained.

I find it very freeing, this lack of material things.

Of course, there is a downside (and you knew there was going to be one didn’t you?).
It does mean that I’m increasingly paranoid about backing up data and music.

Currently the entire Ipod gets backed up onto the computer and two separate external hard disks.
Every six months or so the music collection gets backed up onto the school server as well, usually during a training day when it’s not so noticeable that the entire network has slowed to a crawl.
On top of this all the ipod music is backed up onto CD-R and I’m going to be replacing that soon by backing it up onto DVD-R.
Then each CD that I’m getting rid of is copied as an audio cd onto CD-R and stored in a little paper sleeve.
Is that complicated enough yet?

Probably not.
I did look, a little while back, at the prospect of getting hold of some cheap 30/60GB hard drives and backing up the entire thing onto those as well. My thinking was that, seeing as 160Gb was the new default for external hard disks and these were retailing at £50, it should be possible to pick old 30/60Gb ones up for just a few quid. It seems not. Because they’re all old now there’s very few of them about and trying to get hold of them is bloody difficult and the people wanting them are willing to pay for them.
I shall try again in a while and see what the prices are like then.

The other downside of this new audio freedom and no longer wanting to have anything other than the audio file is that I suddenly, somehow have found my 30Gb Ipod, that was so huge when I bought it is suddenly left with a mere 2GB. Ouch. Time to get a bigger one then.

It was a perfectly logical assumption on my part when I got the Ipod that said I’d only need 30Gb. After all, loading every single piece of music onto it from me, Louise and Molly gave me 8Gb space. And at the rate I’d accumulated new music over the course of 2006 I’d never fill that 8Gb.

But that was before finding mp3 blogs and before realising that not only was Bittorrenting easy and (in my experience so far) safe, I could also selectively download stuff to assuage my guilty conscience.

Because I download according to the simple rules:
If it’s old music that you wouldn’t have bought in a million years – fair game. (I’ve just downloaded and loved a couple of Yazoo cds and a remix disk. But there was absolutely no way I’d have bought those ever.)
If it’s major label music – pretty fair game.
If it’s new music and especially if it’s a small upcoming band – get the cd.
Until amazon or someone similar start doing a DRMfree mp3 site – then I’ll go there if the price is right.
Because it’s plainly obvious that downloading music is the future and the now. The simple fact that big record companies refuse to even think about it, or so it seems, means that they’ll not be around that much longer in their present form.

Want, want, want, want, want ………..

January 16, 2008

Typical, it’s January and I’m skint.
And then my want gene kicks in.

Want #1
80Gb of glorious I-Pod:Actually this is fast becoming a need. My 30Gb Ipod has a pitiful 6Gb left on it and that’s filling up fast.

Want #2:
A better Ipod speaker system.
My current setup is good, but I’m after a little more oomph.

and finally….

Want #3:
Asus eepc. Only £200 for this little (very little) beauty. A suitable replacement for the Libretto. A great reason to learn Linux (I’ve been meaning to for ages). And gorgeous.
Jez is getting one soon. Pete’s talking about getting one. I want mine!!!!

So,
you know how much you all love me?
Oh, go on. You know you want to.

UPDATE – more wants and changes to the list here.
